New & novel psychotropic medications & beyond
Objectives:
- Identify two newly approved psychotropic medications and the mental health disorder they treat.
- Identify and understand the mechanism of action for two novel treatments.
- Evaluate the clinical significance of two emerging medications designated as breakthrough therapies in late-stage clinical trials.

Richard Edward Gestring, M.D.
Dr. Gestring is a board-certified psychiatrist with over a decade of experience in psychiatric care and leadership. He currently serves as the Statewide Psychiatric Director for Centurion Health in Missouri and previously founded and ran an outpatient clinic, Empower Psych Centers LLC while also serving as the Medical Director of an Inpatient Substance Abuse Facility, The Harris House Foundation.
Dr. Gestring completed his psychiatry residency at East Carolina University, where he served as Chief Resident (2012–2013) and earned multiple accolades, including nominations for Resident of the Year (2012, 2013) and the NIMH Outstanding Resident Award (2012). During that time, he also did research on Bath Salts and was published in the journal General Hospital Psychiatry and presented the results at national conferences. He also is a retired U.S. Army Sergeant (E-5), having served in Operation Enduring Freedom, earning decorations such as the Army Commendation Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal.
