Personality impairment: Working with challenging individuals

Objectives:

  1. Review the four basic elements of personality as presented in the DSM-5.
  2. Describe personality as falling along a continuum of pathology.
  3. Learn practical skills to work more effectively with individuals who exhibit challenging personality traits and functioning.

Sharen Barboza, Ph.D.

Dr. Sharen Barboza is a clinical and consulting psychologist who has worked in correctional mental health for more than 20 years. She provides monitoring, consultation, training, and expert opinions regarding the delivery of mental health services in correctional settings as well as behavioral and emotional wellness. Dr. Barboza’s publication topics include suicide risk, criminal thinking, and reduction of self-injury. She has a master’s in experimental psychology from Tufts University, a PhD in clinical psychology from Fairleigh Dickinson University, and certification in Wholebeing Positive Psychology.
