Transgender health in corrections: An update an open discussion

Objectives:

  1. Review the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for gender dysphoria and for disorders that require consideration as alternative explanations for the patient’s presentation
  2. Review the World Professional Association for Transgender Health Standards of Care for the Health of Transsexual, Transgender, and Gender Nonconforming People
  3. Examine the recent litigation regarding gender confirmation surgery throughout the United States
  4. Conduct an open discussion focusing on how correctional healthcare professionals are working with this population in the current environment

Joel T. Andrade, PhD, LICSW, CCHP-MH

Dr. Joel Andrade holds a PhD and MSW from the Boston College Graduate School of Social Work with a concentration in forensics. He has worked in correctional and forensic mental health since 1997. He has presented and published journal articles and book chapters on numerous correctional health care topics including psychopathy, violence risk assessment, self-injurious behavior, suicide prevention and intervention, designing alternatives to segregation units for correctional systems, and gender dysphoria. Dr. Andrade is also the editor of The Handbook of Violence Risk Assessment: New Approaches for Mental Health Professionals.
