Grand Rounds

Plan to attend the next Correctional Medicine Grand Rounds, on Thursday, August 7, 2025 at 1:00 PM Eastern time. We had people show up too late to the last session because they got the time zone wrong…

This session will feature Mary Ann Curl, MD, MS as moderator of a session about interesting cases in Correctional Medicine. We expect cases in mental health, infectious diseases, internal medicine, and family medicine.

Dr. Curl is the current Chief Medical Officer for the Washington State Department of Corrections and was recently elected to the ACCP Board of Directors. Dr. Curl is board certified in both internal medicine and geriatric medicine.

Most recently, Dr. Curl has served as the department’s facility medical director for the Washington State Penitentiary in Walla Walla, Wash. During the past two years, Dr. Curl spent time working at nearly all major facilities, some minimum-security facilities and work release facilities. Prior to joining the department in August 2021, Dr. Curl spent two decades in various medical and healthcare leadership roles within the Veterans Administration.

Dr. Curl has a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Abilene Christian University in Abilene, TX, and a Master of Science in physiology at the Baylor College of Dentistry. She received her Medical Degree from The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, and completed her residency at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC.

We hope you can participate and share your insights at this Correctional Medicine Grand Rounds session.  See you soon at this Correctional Medicine Grand Rounds session.

Thursday, August 7, 2025 at 1:00 PM Eastern time.

Title:  Compassion and Care—Case Histories in Correctional Medicine

During this session, we will seek participants’ guidance on various aspects of the Correctional Medicine Grand Rounds program. We hope you can attend for what will be a great networking and educational opportunity and your opportunity to give input into the program itself.

Objectives:

1) Discuss patient cases relevant to correctional medicine.

2)Develop a framework for storytelling as a way to educate one another about the pitfalls and challenges of healthcare “within the walls”.

3) Network about solutions to difficult medical issues.

4) Appreciate the richness of the correctional milieu and the stories that bind us together professionally.

Seeking to better meet the educational needs of members, the ACCP has decided to test different days and times for Correctional Medicine Grand Rounds. The August Grand Rounds session will take place at 1:00 PM on Thursday, August 7, 2025. This Grand Rounds session, as usual, will be one hour in duration and will include ample time for questions, discussion, and networking. At this time, Grand Rounds sessions are free to all attendees. CME credit through the American Academy of Family Physicians. Nursing, PA, and Mental Health credit is also possible through agreements between the AAFP and your professional organizations.

We encourage you to invite your friends and colleagues to attend this session, which will inform us on practical measures we can take to improve patient care and risk management in the correctional setting.
